Meat Whistle – Umpqua
The Meat Whistle is a fly designed to mimic the movement of a crawdad while swimming like a streamer. Inspired by angler John Barr’s search for a fly that could fish as effectively as his favorite jig and Twin-tail Grub trailer, this fly was crafted to hop and swim in a natural way.
John used a Gamakatsu 6041 90-degree jig hook to tie the Meat Whistle, achieving a performance that matched or exceeded traditional lures. It is ideal for use on jig hooks in bass ponds and other freshwater environments where natural movement is key.

Fished it in a local pond this weekend and caught several bass. The way it hops and swims is exactly what I was looking for. It’s a solid alternative to traditional jigs and works well on a jig hook.

Used it in a slow-moving pond with little current. It stayed on the surface and attracted fish that didn’t bite on standard lures. A good addition to my fly box.

After trying several flies, this one stands out. It moves naturally and fish seem to react to it. I tied it on a 90-degree jig hook and it worked perfectly in the morning light.
